Timeline and routes
In the golden age of Egypt 1782 to 1570 BC Pharoah Ahmose 1 built an empire on trading routes that stretched from Sudan in the south for turquoise, Ivory and gold, Trans Saharan routes for spices and silks, and across the middle east for cedar frankincense and Myth.
Between 350 and 306 BC Pytheas of Massalia a Greek astronomer set sail in an expedition to the end of the world , from the Greek colony of Massalia . His ships travelled west through the pillars of Hercules (Straights of Gibraltar) and north along the western coast of Spain and France finally landing in the British Isles, famous in the ancient world for their Tin mines and metal work. His expedition established the Amber route for trading of precious ornaments and jewels made of amber, copper, gold and silver, and tools and weapons forged from Iron. During the Greco Roman period of Egypt Tiberius Caesar Augustus, and Julius Caesar established road networks throughout the greater empire. Routes were fortified to protect traders from raiders across the middle east and the Amber Road was straightened and paved all the way to Britain. The world famous Mediterranean route initially established by the ancient Egyptians prospered for 1,600 years until the collapse of the Roman empire.
